The new rate will lower the cost from N209 per/kWh to N160/kWh, starting August 1, 2025. This decision is part of a new tariff order issued to MainPower Electricity Distribution Ltd and aims to reflect the state government's subsidy on power generation to help consumers.
The change is based on the Enugu State Electricity Law of 2023, which allows the EERC to manage electric power operations in the state.
Governor Peter Mbah signed this law in September 2023, following a constitutional amendment that gave states authority over electricity matters within their borders.
