UMUAHIA— Igbo women's socio-political group, Ndị Nne Ọma Forum (NNOF), has joined the demand for the unconditional release of Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Mr Kanu, who leads the movement for an independent state known as Biafra, remains detained and his health has been deteriorating since 2021 after seized in Kenya and renditioned to Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday, NNOF said Kanu's continued incarceration is illegal and an "insult to the Ndigbo who face discrimination and ethnic cleansing" in the country.
The Chairlady of the group, Mrs. Nkechinyere Agu, who spoke after a meeting held in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, said the incarceration of the IPOB leader had contributed to insecurity in the southeast.
“Federal forces and certain criminals are making our region even more dangerous. They are hiding under the agitation and accusing IPOB just to indict our son Nnamdi Kanu,” Mrs Agu said.
According to her, “the release of the IPOB leader will restore peace in the South-East and help the fight against insecurity.”
“We will take to the streets to protest and take action against the federal government if it fails to release our son Nnamdi Kanu,” the group said.
